When Sarah Winston’s estranged brother Luke shows up on her doorstep, asking her not to tell anyone he’s in town—especially her ex, the chief of police—the timing is strange, to say the least. Hours earlier, Sarah’s latest garage sale was taped off as a crime scene following the discovery of a murdered Vietnam vet and his gravely injured wife—her clients, the Spencers.
BUT IS HE A KILLER?
All Luke will tell Sarah is that he’s undercover, investigating a story. Before she can learn more, he vanishes as suddenly as he appeared. Rummaging through his things for a clue to his whereabouts, Sarah comes upon a list of veterans and realizes that to find her brother, she’ll have to figure out who killed Mr. Spencer. And all without telling her ex . . .
A Good Day to Buy,book 4 in the Sarah Winston Garage Sale Mysteries by Sherry Harris, is another fantastic installment in the world of professional garage sale organization. While Sarah is running a sale for a local Vietnam veteran and his wife, they are found inside the garage in an cordoned off area; he’s dead and she’s seriously injured. When Sarah’s brother Luke, who has been out of her life for 20 years, suddenly appears at her home after the murder occurs, she can’t help but be suspicious. But is her brother involved? When all evidence points to Luke, Sarah makes it her mission to get to the bottom of things, all without telling CJ.
The slow rekindling of the relationship between Sarah and CJ makes me all warm and fuzzy. The ending of their union, as discussed in a previous book, wasn’t all what it appeared to be, and it makes me happy that they are trying to find a way to rebuild. There are still issues to be resolved but they are both trying and I’m rooting for them. I was happy to see Sarah’s brother re-enter her life even though the conditions aren’t favorable. The author drew out a lot of emotions that are felt by the reader, not just with Luke but with other scenarios. The plot flows well and is fast paced. I was engaged throughout the novel, never hitting any slow spots.
I really enjoy the Garage Sale Mysteries by Sherry Harris. As a lover of garage sales, yard sales, flea markets, etc., a cozy setting of this nature makes me happy. Sarah is a great protagonist and has been in such a way that I feel like I know her personally. She has very realistic characteristics and the author really brings Sarah to life. The secondary characters are also realistically written. As I said about the first 3 books in the series, A Good Day to Buy is a fantastic cozy mystery that is full of twists, turns, distractions, and red herrings. There are suspenseful, humorous, and heartbreaking moments that are sure to keep the reader engaged. The author sets up many of the characters as the potential suspect and expertly pulls the tablecloth out from underneath them without spilling the truth.
